Midyear report, May 2011

Hello from Alberta South!

Our main project, again this year, was our annual education day held in February 2011. The topic was “Stroke Across the Lifespan”. The morning focused on Pediatric Stroke, with a Pediatric Stroke Neurologist, a Pediatric Stroke Clinic Nurse and a Neuropsychologist speaking. In the afternoon speakers presented on the Adult Acute Stroke Team, the Adult Stroke Prevention Clinic, and research into new Stroke Rehabilitation computerized equipment. We had one hundred and seventeen registrants and the evaluations were very positive.

We have been holding monthly meetings to plan for our education day and do other business. Each meeting has an hour for an educational component. The topics have been Seizure Monitoring Unit, MS and Vitamin D, Nursing Focus – CT Images in Traumatic Brain Injury, Intrathecal Drug Delivery, Humour and Health, and CJD. Our final meeting before the Annual National meeting in Vancouver will be a potluck, and members who are presenting at CANN National will have an opportunity to practice their talks.

We have had discussions on how to increase membership and attendance at monthly meetings. We have a great attendance at our annual education day each year. We are going to include the contact names we have for other groups of nurses, outside of the dedicated Neuroscience units, when we send out the monthly email notices for our meetings. We are hoping to encourage participation from the nurses working with Neuroscience patients in the community.

Looking forward to seeing fellow CANN members in Vancouver.
